About the Host:

Mary-Margaret McMahon is the Member of Provincial Parliament for Beaches-East York and the Ontario Liberal Caucus Critic for Emergency Management and Critic for the Environment and Climate Action, as well as Chair for the Standing Committee on Government Agencies. A natural-born leader, Mary-Margaret McMahon was a strong City Builder long before she was first elected to Toronto City Council in 2010 and then to the Ontario Legislature in 2022 and again in 2025. She worked tirelessly on countless projects in her community ranging from environmental education, small business advocacy, and streetscape beautification to public awareness-raising on food security initiatives. During her two terms as a municipal councillor she implemented the City’s first climate change adaptation plan (TransformTO), spearheaded the Laneway Suites planning policy, and contributed to the Vision Zero road safety plan. MPP McMahon jumped back into politics because of the climate emergency. Since then, she has been sharply focused on implementing solutions to address the climate crisis, notably, advocating for an All-Party Great Lakes Committee and sitting on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Legislative Caucus; hosting a Nature Summit to bring together eco-experts from water, plastic pollution reduction, species protection, and beyond; introducing Bill 29 and Bill 37 to support safe and healthy communities during extreme heat and increasingly severe, and frequent floods, respectively; as well as Bill 32 to implement a Bottle Deposit System and bolster the Circular Economy; Bill 90 to initiate a review of textile waste diversion systems; and Bill 87 to bolster waste diversion and the circular economy in the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional sectors. Specifically, this event is inspired by Mary-Margaret McMahon's Motion to establish an All-Party Great Lakes Committee. Tabled in November of 2025, the mandate of the Committee would address the health, safety, and well-being of the Great Lakes. Rooted in her unwavering belief that the climate crisis is a non-partisan issue, and the magic that happens when grassroots action meets supportive policy, MPP McMahon is determined to protect our magnificent Great Lakes and work with everyone and anyone to do so!
