Rooting for Rooftops - Eastdale Collegiate School Garden
Eastdale Collegiate Institute is a unique high school that supports diverse learners through small class sizes and specialized programming. But that’s not the only thing that is unique about this high school- it also has a quarter of an acre roof top garden that is producing high quality, diverse, fresh food that is served in the school’s kitchen and classes. The food scraps from the prepared produce is then brought back to the compost bins on the roof top to eventually be put out on the garden beds. This circular economy is essential to our programming and in our fight against climate change.
Come learn more about circular economy, composting, and growing your own food. Join us for a tour of the roof and see, smell, & taste what we’re growing. We will plant seeds together while discussing the challenges facing this school and the opportunities that this garden provides for everyone.
About the Host: Green Thumbs Growing Kids has over 25 years of experience connecting children and youth to the natural world through programming in their school gardens. We are a downtown Toronto-based non-profit with deep partnerships with local schools and community agencies in Regent Park, St. James Town and nearby. We focus on creating innovative, hands-on garden programs that integrate environmental education, food literacy, and nature connection. In partnering with schools and community agencies, we promote urban agriculture, climate change solutions, healthy soil, indigenous teachings, and support both physical and mental well-being. Food gardening provides a window into human impacts on ecosystems, and our approach to environmental education emphasizes experiential learning. Our gardens are living classrooms where learning comes to life!
