About Event

When the intelligence in your product is defined by someone outside engineering, testing gets strange.

The credit risk team owns the adjudication rules. The R&D team owns the extrapolation model. Developers implement it, QA verifies it, and the only people qualified to say whether the answer is right are nowhere near the test suite.

At The Test Tribe’s 28th Calgary Meetup, Ian Percival will explore how QA can close that gap by giving domain experts a direct way to validate the logic they define before it reaches production.

What's on the Agenda?

They Define It, We Defend It
by
Ian Percival, Director of Software Engineering at Highwood Emissions Management

When the logic behind a product is defined outside engineering, QA may be responsible for verifying behaviour without being the team best placed to decide whether the outcome is actually correct.

Ian will cover the tooling QA can build to close that gap.

The session will look at control panels that let domain experts adjust inputs and run their own scenarios, along with harnesses that capture an expert’s “yes, that’s right” as a fixture with expected results.

The idea is to create a workflow where the people who define the business logic can validate it directly, while QA turns that validation into something repeatable and testable.

How This Meetup Solves Your Problem

If you have ever tested logic you did not fully own or understand because the real answer lived with a risk team, R&D group, data team, or another function outside engineering, this session will be relevant.

Instead of leaving QA to interpret what “correct” means, Ian will show how tooling can bring domain experts directly into the validation process.

The session will help you think about:

  • Giving domain experts a practical way to run and validate their own scenarios

  • Capturing expert-approved outcomes as reusable test fixtures

  • Reducing ambiguity around expected results

  • Building a clearer connection between domain knowledge and automated validation

  • Creating repeatable checks for logic that engineering does not define itself
