Intermingle with microbes in a wild fermentation workshop this World Ferment Day!

Fermentation is an ancient practice that cuts across borders, cultures and culinary traditions. The act of fermentation is a process of microbial collaboration, one that transforms not just our food, but our entire world.

In this workshop we will discuss some traditional fermentation practices using indigenous microbial cultures that are slowly fading away. Rapid urbanisation, mass production, and a "fear of microbes" has made us passive consumers in the food chain, giving way to alarming levels of food waste.

Fermentation can bring us closer to the food we eat, making the uneatable edible, challenging our notions of waste and hygiene. Together we will smell, taste and co-create ferments, working with the microbes around us.

Join us to:

  • Learn about wild fermentation.

  • Taste a variety of wildly fermented products (drinks, pickles, vinegar etc.)

  • Co-create a community ferment using seasonal vegetables.

  • Carry home a jar of fermented vegetables, and a copy of "Pass me the microbes," a fermentation zine.

What you need to bring:

  • A clean glass jar (300-500ml) with a tight lid. Or you can purchase one from us at the venue.

  • Any seasonal vegetables, fruits or spices you’d like to ferment - we will have a bunch, but more variety is always fun.

  • A knife and a chopping board or a vegetable grater.

We will provide some vegetables, fruits, mixing bowls, knives and seasonings.

Facilitator Details

Megha is an independent researcher, educator, fermenter and food practitioner. They are the founder of Goblette, an independent food practice based in Kolkata through which they explore the interrelationships between our local environments and global food cultures. Their work explores how food can provide ways to build community and resilience by bringing together diverse experiences and reimagine solutions that have a tangible social impact.
