​You are invited to an evening on how the world's happiest nation is about to become its cleanest.

​Bhutan produces very little waste — roughly 240 tons a day for the entire country, of which about 200 are processable. It is now preparing to eliminate what it has entirely and become the world's first waste-free country, using a carbon-neutral, low-temperature technology that turns waste into clean energy, clean water and fertilizer, and lifts lead and medical hazards out of the environment before they reach a child's bloodstream. The Kingdom that gave the world Gross National Happiness would be the first to design its waste away entirely — the same philosophy, expressed in infrastructure.

​But the part that brought us together is not the chemistry. It is the choice about who benefits.

​In this model the wealth created by cleaning a village stays in that village — flowing back through a cooperative structure into roads, schools, homes, and into the hands of the young “guardians” who run the work and carry it to their neighbours. Drinchengang is the first of these villages: a community rehoused under royal charter, a twenty-year-old landfill cleared, and the value of that work returned to the people living above it.

​Nobody says you can't set up the structure so the value uplift is distributed in an equitable fashion — to a village, a valley, a series of villages.
