Circular SoCal + Santa Monica Airport Conversion: A Tour and Charrette
Join us at the Santa Monica Airport for mini presentations, a short walking tour, and a design charette focused on circularity. This is a 3-hour event, but please feel free to join us for all or part of the event.
The 192-acre Santa Monica Airport Conversion project is a once-in-a-lifetime planning effort to create a framework plan centered on a great park, consistent with Measure LC.
The future plan will enhance connections to the rest of the city, create a vibrant public realm, and increase the quality of life for community members. The airport conversion will serve as a case study for use throughout the event.
Mini presentations by circularity experts in the built environment will be happening throughout the event. Attendees will also have the opportunity to walk over to the public viewing area and observation deck where they can get a view of the airport to see the runway along with some of the existing buildings. Students from SCI-Arc will bring a hands-on circularity activity for participants to dream big on how to reuse the existing materials.
Attendees will also be invited to join in a design charrette containing a brief overview with visuals, a warm-up exercise, and examples of circularity. Breakout sessions will commence where teams may work on circular design solutions with specific prompts relative to the Santa Monica Airport Conversion. Participants will have the opportunity to influence a real-world project and build towards a regenerative future, inspiring participants to implement circular design in their own practices.
