Global Coal Phase-Out Campaign Convening: Accelerating National Coal Phase-Out Targets and Implementation

​Accelerating coal phaseout — transitioning away from the most carbon-intensive source of electricity — is essential to limiting and reversing overshoot of the 1.5°C threshold. Following South Korea’s accession to the Powering Past Coal Alliance and announcement of a 2040 coal phaseout target, this session will examine global progress and the persistent gap between political commitments and implementation. It will explore how countries can deliver a rapid, complete coal phaseout without locking in emissions through LNG expansion, ammonia co-firing, or other fossil fuel-based alternatives.

​Through presentations and discussions, the session will identify concrete policy, financial, and institutional measures to accelerate the early retirement of coal-fired power plants, alongside renewable energy and flexibility resources. Participants will explore support mechanisms, accountability measures, and monitoring frameworks to bring phaseout timelines forward and translate pledges into enforceable policies and measurable action, while supporting a just transition for affected workers and communities.
