Presentations & Speakers

🌟 Apache Iceberg - Governance and Business Continuity

Modern data platforms increasingly behave like software systems — but most organizations still lack safe workflows for changing data. Updating a table in production can easily break downstream pipelines, dashboards, or machine learning models.

In this session, we explore how Write-Audit-Publish (WAP) and Iceberg’s branching and tagging capabilities introduce Git-like workflows to the data lakehouse. Instead of writing directly to production tables, teams can validate changes, test transformations, and audit results before publishing them.

We’ll walk through the core concepts behind WAP, branches, and tags in Apache Iceberg, and explain how they enable safer experimentation, reproducibility, and controlled data releases.

To make this concrete, the session includes a live demo showing how to:

  • write data to a staging branch

  • validate and audit changes

  • publish the result to production

  • use tags to create reproducible data snapshots

If you’re interested in bringing software engineering best practices to data management, this session will show how Iceberg makes it possible.

Viktor Kessler, is Co-Founder of Vakamo and the creator of Lakekeeper, an Apache Licensed Iceberg REST Catalog. He’s a big believer in open standards like Apache Iceberg, which he sees as the backbone of today’s modern, composable Data & Analytics systems.

🌟 Building a Multi-Tenant Iceberg Platform with Stackable: From Hive Metastore to Lakekeeper

At GuideCom, we are building an open-source data platform on Kubernetes using Stackable, with Apache Iceberg as a central part of the architecture.

Our first approach to multi-tenancy was straightforward: each tenant received its own Trino catalog backed by the Hive Metastore. This worked well as long as Trino was the main way to access the platform.

That changed when we started opening the platform to additional engines and tools such as DuckDB and Apache NiFi. To make Iceberg tables accessible across different clients, we needed to move towards the Iceberg REST Catalog API. While Hive REST gave us the required compatibility, it also challenged the isolation model we had relied on before. Running a separate catalog service for every tenant was technically possible, but not an architecture we wanted to operate at scale.

In this talk, we will walk through how our catalog architecture evolved from Hive Metastore to Lakekeeper, the trade-offs we encountered along the way, and how we are designing the platform for both multi-tenant isolation and multi-engine access.

Sönke Liebau is CPO at Stackable. A graduate in business information systems, he has worked in open source and big data for 15 years. In 2020 he co-founded Stackable together with Lars Francke to build an open-source data platform.

Sebastian Bernauer is a software developer at Stackable with a focus on big data. He studied computer science and previously worked as a software developer at 1&1.
