Intro to Ikebana
We will approach flowers spatially, considering how line, placement, and emptiness give shape to an arrangement, and how these elements transform the atmosphere of a space.
The session will begin with a short introduction to ikebana, followed by a demonstration and guided practice.
Participants will learn: • how to use traditional Japanese flower scissors (hanahazami) • cutting techniques, including 水切り (mizukiri) • the foundational structure of ikebana, including the role of three main stems • key spatial principles: line, asymmetry, and ma ( negative space)
Each participant will create a simple arrangement using seasonal materials, with attention to proportion and intention.
• Seasonal flowers and branches to take home • A guided card with basic diagrams (including kenzan placement, measurements of stems, and structure) • Kenzan to take home to continue your ikebana ritual
