SONIC UNITY PRESENTS

Love Wrapped in Sound with PlantWave

Art × Sound Bath × Live Music from Plants

Gabba Gallery · Downtown Los Angeles

Some experiences change the way you hear the world.

This is one of them.

Imagine lying on your mat inside a gallery filled with art while the music of living plants is transmitted through the room in their own electrical language translated into sound.

Fresh from our magical gathering at the Wende MuseumSonic Unity returns with our next Love Wrapped in Sound event.

This time, we’re coming together inside the visionary creative sanctuary of Gabba Gallery, a beloved Los Angeles art gallery founded by Jason Ostro. Their latest exhibition, Echoes of Gen X: The Art of the Fillmore lines the walls with over 1,000 deadstock concert prints from the legendary San Francisco venue spanning the late '80s through early 2000s. Tom Petty. Rage Against the Machine. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Smashing Pumpkins. Decades of music history, preserved in ink.

Against that backdrop, the space becomes a sanctuary for music created directly from flora and fauna by PlantWave from Data Garden's brilliant Joe Patitucci and a sound bath performance by Sandy Duarte.

PLANTWAVE — WHEN PLANTS BECOME MUSICIANS

Since 2012, artist and technologist Joe Patitucci and his team at Data Garden have pioneered something genuinely unlike anything else: a technology called PlantWave that translates the bioelectrical signals of living plants into real-time music.

Here's how it works: two small electrodes attach to a leaf. As the plant photosynthesizes, moves water, and responds to its environment — light, temperature, touch, your presence in the room — those invisible electrical fluctuations are mapped to musical notes and played live through custom instruments. Every single note is a direct expression of something happening inside the plant at that exact moment.

The result is a continuous, living, breathing soundscape that is never the same twice.

What audiences have discovered goes even deeper: the plants respond to people. Energy healers, botanists, and florists have watched the melodies shift the moment they walked into the room. A little girl once turned to her mother mid-performance and said: "All you need to do is think 'light coming through your hands' and the plants will sing for you."

PlantWave has performed at SXSW three times, collaborated with legendary musician Laraaji, and been featured in WIRED, NPR, Popular Mechanics, Artforum, The Guardian, and Vice. It has graced art galleries, Buddhist temples, and healing spaces around the world.

"Data Garden is building a bridge from a world of digital distractions to a life of physical presence." - Joe Patitucci

Joe’s public LA performances are rare. This afternoon at Gabba Gallery is one of the few chances to experience it live in this city. Not a festival. Not from a theater seat. You, on your mat, as living plants compose for the room.

No two performances are alike.

This one will never happen again.

THE DAY

12:00 NOONDOORS OPEN: Arrive, find your spot, lay down your mat. Gabba’s latest exhibit surrounds you as the space prepares to open into sound.

ABOUT JOE PATITUCCI | PLANTWAVE

Joe Patitucci is a multi-media artist and pioneer in the field of plant music and bio-sonification, uniquely blending his background in music, design, and environmental advocacy. His innovative work creates immersive sonic environments that bridge natural and digital worlds, resonating with audiences' intuitive connection to Earth.

As the creator of PlantWave, Joe uses specialized sensors to translate the bio-rhythms and electrical frequencies of plants into ambient music. In 2021, Joe’s company, Data Garden, released PlantWave. PlantWave enables anyone to experience plant music in their homes, gardens, or on the trail, democratizing this unique interaction and integrating Joe's vision into everyday life.

ABOUT JASON OSTRO | GABBA GALLERY

Jason Ostro’s warm personality, positive attitude, and keen eye have earned him the respect of artists and collectors in Los Angeles and beyond. In a few short years, he has built Gabba Gallery into a fixture on the LA art scene and was named one of the “8 Best Art Curators in Los Angeles” by CBS.

Jason grew up in Detroit where his mother, artist Judy Ostro, taught him to paint and to value creativity. Since then Jason has always worked in creative fields. He worked in music and fashion for many years before turning to art. While selling clothing through his fashion business, Jason began buying and selling street art on the side. He loved it and began fantasizing about opening a gallery. When a close friend showed him the perfect space, Jason closed his clothing business and fantasy became reality. He named the gallery in honor of his late father whose nickname for Jason was “Gabba.”

Jason is passionate about the power of art to build and enhance community. His efforts to beautify the city through Gabba Alley Project earned him a Certificate of Recognition from Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. He looks forward to expanding the Alley Project and continuing to brighten the city with murals.

ABOUT SONIC UNITY

Sonic Unity is a collective devoted to exploring sound as a universal language for healing, connection, and collective resonance—where love is the language beyond words. Their work brings together ancient and contemporary vibrational expressions through sound, art, and technology to create immersive experiences that support nervous system regulation, emotional clarity, embodied presence, and community gathering.

Sonic Unity was co-founded by wellness & creative artist Sandy Duarte and wellness entrepreneur Melissa Rosen with the mission to foster coherence within the self, between individuals, and across communities through intentional sound and vibratory experiences.

Sandy’s sound practice was born during her journey through chemotherapy as a Stage 4 cancer patient, where sound became a source of calm, grounding, and inner peace. That lived experience informs the depth, care, and intention behind every Sonic Unity offering.

As founders of this movement, we leave you with both our ethos to ponder with joy and possibility.

“The power of love’s sound is for everyone.” – Sandy Duarte
“Listening is love.” – Melissa Rosen

We can't wait to greet you.

Welcome to a piece of our hearts.
