Global Energy Transition in an Unstable World: Balancing Urgency, Access, and Sustainability

The global energy transition is unfolding against a backdrop of unprecedented disruption. Technological advances and climate imperatives are driving progress toward sustainability initiatives and cleaner energy systems, yet large-scale shocks - geopolitical disruptions, armed conflicts, supply chain breakdowns, migration surges, etc. - can alter priorities overnight.

In many developing nations, urgent economic growth needs make energy access a top priority. When instability strikes, the pressure to secure any available energy source can intensify, even if it means leaning on higher-emission fuels. This tension between immediate necessity and long-term sustainability is a defining challenge of our time.

Join us as we explore:

  • How global instability impacts sustainability initiatives and the pace of the energy transition.

  • Why certain crises accelerate clean technology adoption while others delay it.

  • Strategies for aligning urgent energy needs with sustainable pathways, particularly in the Global South.

The discussion will remain non-political, focusing on human impacts, systemic challenges, and practical solutions for a resilient, sustainable future.

Panelists:

  • Dr. Thulisile Mphambukeli, Head of Department and Associate Professor, Urban and Regional Planning @ University of Johannesburg

  • Jasmin Sadegh, Consultant @ The World Bank

  • Seth Eslami, COO @ Stellar International Commercial Real Estate

  • Umair Surani, Energy & Sustainability Advisor @ Environ Energy (moderator)
