Whip Sheet

Resolved, That AI can make art.

“I feel like we’re in the end of art, human art.” - Grimes

“Art and its works as generated and created by the mind (spirit) are themselves of a spiritual nature…” - Hegel

Artificial intelligence is the next great advance in creative power. AI has a unique process of creation, similar to that in which humans engage. Just as human imagination is the patterning of experience, the capabilities of artificial intelligence derive from the dataset upon which it is trained. Yet, even if there were no analogy between AI and imagination, it would make no difference. In the end, artistic process and authorial intention do not matter. The only thing we ought to consider is the product itself. The sovereign artist is dead, and we should rejoice at the funeral. Doubly so, for AI ushers in a new democratic era for creativity. Yet;

Artificial intelligence can never produce true art. Art is a fundamentally creative endeavor. To create, one must have an intellect. In other words, one must be a subject, a knower. Supposed "artificial intelligence” lacks true subjectivity – and any subjectivity we ascribe to it arises from a statistical simulacrum. Artificial intelligence amounts to nothing more than mechanistic mimicry, and lacks the human spirit which is necessary for the creation of art. Even when some artistic product is pleasing to us, why do we feel deceived when we learn that it was created by AI? Because it lacks the back-and-forth interplay between creator and creation, and for that reason is soulless. The artist is not dead, and if he is we must revive him.
