​The Collective is delighted to convene an interdisciplinary group for a salon on the role of privacy and the unaccountability of the self in the good life and a healthy society.

​Lowry Pressly (Assistant Professor of Political Science, Stanford University) will draw on his book The Right to Oblivion: Privacy and the Good Life to lay out his fresh account of privacy and elaborate upon unanswered questions in privacy discourse. His account builds on an eclectic mix of thinkers including Arendt, Nietzsche, and Borges. The Collective will then engage in a moderated discussion that will be wide-ranging and explore the implications of privacy on flourishing in the machine intelligence age, memory, leisure, moral responsibility, and a reenchanted worldview. Afterwards, we will leave plenty of time for cultivating intellectual friendship and festivities.

​​7:30-8:00 pm: Lowry Pressly

​Pressly will state his case for what privacy truly protects and critique the prevailing views of privacy as property and control of information flows. He will set the stage for our discussion by laying out where privacy discourse is headed and pertinent questions on the philosophical, sociological, and technological implications of our conceptions of privacy.

​8:00-9:30 pm: Moderated Discussion

​We will observe the Chatham House Rule and loosely follow the Liberty Fund Rules.

​​9:30 pm-Late: Oblivion!

​Live jazz provided by the Ethan Feldman Trio. Our free discussion will be conducted in a spirit of oblivion. No phones. No pictures. If you hang around long enough, join us for our signature nightcap of pastel de nata.
