About Event

Join us for weekly crochet sessions where we’ll create squares together to be used in Woven Grove, a community-led yarn installation that will (legally!) yarn-bomb UBC’s bosque.

These sessions are open to everyone - absolute beginners, seasoned crocheters, and those who’ve never held a hook before. No materials are required. If you want to join, there should be no barriers. All supplies will be provided, and you’re encouraged to lean on your community for guidance, conversation, and support as we make things together.

This is a space to slow down, learn something new, and feel connected, whether you come every week or just once.

What is Woven Grove?

2025 has been a heavy year for many students. Woven Grove was created as a response to that weight, a way to bring people together through gentle, hands-on making.

The project invites members of the UBC community to contribute crocheted squares and uplifting messages, which will be sewn together to transform UBC’s bosque into a bold, dream-like forest. The installation will feature hand-crocheted vines, leaves, flowers, whimsical insects, and messages of care created by students, staff, and community members.

All contributions will be thoughtfully interwoven through original crochet designs, unifying many small pieces into a single immersive environment.

Installed in September, the forest is meant to welcome students into a new semester with a moment of pause and wonder, a place where passersby feel briefly transported into another world.

🌼 About the Organizer

Woven Grove is led by Hannah Ramos, recipient of the UBC Inspire Art Grant and a Bachelor of Science student in Food, Nutrition and Health at UBC. She is a self-taught, free-form crochet artist and upcycler of over five years, and a former president of the SFU Knitting Club. Her crocheted bags have won awards, recognized by SFU’s Chang Instituate at the SFU Maker’s Fest and got the entrepreneurial mindset award

Crochet has been a source of grounding, healing, and connection in her life, and this project grew out of a desire to share that sense of care and belonging with others on campus.

FAQ:

“Can I just come to hangout and crochet my own thing?”

  • Sessions are low-pressure and drop-in friendly. You’re welcome to come, observe, or just hang out.

“I’m not a UBC student, can I still join?”

  • Of course you are! Everyone is welcome!

“How will the trees be protected?”

  • The health of the trees is our top priority. All installation methods are reviewed through the campus permitting process. The installation will:

    • Be attached using non-invasive, non-damaging methods

    • Never be nailed, stapled, or pierced into trees

    • Be installed loosely to allow for airflow and natural movement

    • Avoid wrapping tightly around trunks or branches

    • Follow arborist guidance on spacing and placement

“How long will the installation be up?”

  • The installation will run for approximately 4 weeks in September and will be fully deinstalled on October 4. This timeline was intentionally chosen: to avoid nesting season, prevent prolonged exposure to rain and damp conditions, and to reduce any potential environmental impact

  • All materials will be completely removed at the end of the installation period.

“Will wildlife be affected?”

The installation is located in a highly urbanized, high-foot-traffic area surrounded by concrete buildings and pedestrian pathways. Because:

  • It is not installed during nesting season

  • It is temporary (4 weeks)

  • It is monitored by arborists and landscape architects

  • Will be fully removed

The project has been assessed as feasible by campus landscape architects and arborists. If any unforeseen concerns arise, adjustments will be made immediately in consultation with UBC staff

“Why create an installation in nature at all?”

Woven Grove is about reconnecting people with their environment through care, softness, and collective making. Environmental responsibility is central to the project’s planning and execution. The intention is not to disrupt nature, but to:

  • Encourage students to slow down

  • Promote sustainable crafting practices

  • Highlight thoughtful material choices

  • Foster community in shared outdoor space

Come make something with us. Your hands, your time, and your presence are enough!!
