MIT AI @ Woodwell - Climate Hack
The event
Woodwell scientists and climate-focused scientists from the Woods Hole scientific community are invited to collaborate with MIT AI engineers in this whole-day hack event on on Sunday 7 September. This is an in-person event.
Sundai Club is the largest MIT-Harvard AI hacker group that meets every Sunday to build new AI apps from scratch by the end of the day. Their goal is to push the envelope of what is possible to build in a day with AI.
How to participate
Scientists: Do you have a scientific question/problem that could be rapidly iterated using the power of AI tools and the expertise of MIT/Harvard AI engineers? If so, come ready with an idea for the hackers. If you have a relevant dataset you would like to contribute, get in touch with [email protected]. The more datasets our hackers have, the more types of challenges we can tackle! You'll interact with, guide, and advise the hackers as they build their prototypes throughout the day. They will need you for real-world grounding (e.g., do the model's assumptions make sense?).
Hackers: Are you a developer looking to build, design, grow, and be a part of pushing the envelope of what is possible to build in a day with AI? Do you want to use your skills to develop a prototype that can help address climate change? Come and collaborate with leading climate scientists to put your knowledge to work.
What we'll build
An example of a suitable idea is an AI tool prototype that can generate flood risk assessments for any community in the world. Hackers would train a model on Woodwell's existing flood risk assessments for various communities and then would apply that model to mapping data for communities that have never had a climate risk assessment conducted for flooding. This would create access to rough-and-ready DIY climate risk assessments for specific elements (like flooding), which would enable disadvantaged communities to better use their limited resources to prepare for a changing climate.
