About Event

This is an official Apache Iceberg meetup at the Google Austin office. This event is for anyone working with Iceberg, from hands-on practitioners to data engineers and others who are curious about open table formats and where the Iceberg ecosystem is heading.

Hear technical talks from speakers at Google Cloud, Altinity, and Datastrato on their latest work in the Iceberg OSS ecosystem, and use the time to connect with others building and learning in this space.

Food and beverages will be provided, and the event is free to attend!

Speakers

  • Parth Desai, Product Manager @ Google (BigQuery)

    • Title: AI-native, Open and Interoperable lakehouse on Google Cloud

    • Description: We will walk you through how you can build an AI-native, Open and interoperable lakehouse on Google Cloud Platform, with unified governance and security. Imagine your data engineering team using spark or other OSS processing engines and your data scientists using BigQuery for advanced analytics, operating on the same copy of data in a unified catalog. Activate agentic AI workflows using 1p Agents and AI functions on top of your Iceberg data in BigQuery.

  • Robert Hodges, CEO @ Altinity

    • Title: Building a Fast Foundation for AI with ClickHouse® and Apache Iceberg

    • Description: AI applications need data. Lots of it. Altinity's Project Antalya extends ClickHouse® to introduce separation of compute and storage on shared Iceberg table data. The result: fast, flexible query that extends the life of real-time analytic applications and lays the foundation for handling AI use cases. Our talk explains how ClickHouse accesses Iceberg, shows how we extended it, and demonstrates performance results. Antalya is fast and 100% open source. Try it yourself during the talk!

  • Mark Hoerth, Product Lead @ Datastrato

    • Title: The Governed Semantic Layer: What Agents Need That Iceberg Doesn't Have

    • Description: An agent handed an Iceberg table gets columns, not meaning. It does not know what "revenue" is, which join is correct, or which of four date fields to trust. Open Semantic Interchange now gives us a shared, Apache-licensed way to write that down, and MCP gives agents a way to consume it. What neither provides is governance. A metric is a query, and the semantic layer sits above every access control in the stack. We will show Apache Gravitino serving OSI semantics and Iceberg tables through one MCP endpoint, with the caller's identity carried end to end, and make the case that the catalog is where semantics and policy have to meet.
