Whitepaper Reading Club: Gatling: Rapid-Fire Consensus from Parallel Composition - WPRC NYC
Gatling: Rapid-Fire Consensus from Parallel Composition
The paper addresses a structural bottleneck in modern blockchain networks: the inter-proposal time (the time between block proposals). Existing single-chain pipelined protocols have hit a performance floor equal to one network delay (Δ), because a leader traditionally needs to see the previous block before proposing a new one.
The authors present Gatling, an atomic broadcast protocol that breaks this floor. By running multiple parallel instances of a standard consensus protocol and staggering their schedules, Gatling achieves arbitrarily small inter-proposal times (ε < Δ) without requiring complex protocol-level optimization or sacrificing fault tolerance

About Whitepaper Reading Club
We are a community of founders, researchers, and builders across Singapore, Malaysia, San Francisco, Bangkok, New York, Lagos, Taipei, and Hong Kong. We meet in person every month to read, discuss, and pressure-test the latest blockchain papers, protocols, and technical ideas.
Learn more: Website · Summaries · Calendar
We create detailed, easy-to-understand summaries for each paper and have held 80+ sessions since June 2023, covering Account Abstraction, Parallel Chains, EIPs, the Bitcoin ecosystem, and AI x Crypto. We are ecosystem-agnostic, not for profit, and focused on projects with technical, product, or social innovation.
