Whitepaper Reading Club: Finally, Decentralized Storage & Access Control?
Finally, Decentralized Storage & Access Control?
Decentralized storage has been a dream since the Sia, and Filecoin Days. It was why I got into this space in 2016 :) Distributes files across a network rather than relying on a single provider, in a decentralized way. Walrus takes this approach by splitting files into recoverable pieces, keeping data available even when some storage nodes fail.
Storage is one part of the picture. Seal adds encryption and access control, using rules defined on Sui and multiple key servers to let authorized users decrypt data.
We’ll explore:
How they work: Walrus’s approach to storage and Seal’s approach to controlling access.
How they fit together: Combining data availability with programmable permissions.
Where they go next: Potential applications, the tradeoffs against cloud services, and what cost, reliability, and user experience must look like to drive wider adoption.
