PORTAL OPENING
Join Forest For Trees For The Opening of PORTAL, our summer exhibition on Governors Island, as well as the closing weekend for our first cohort of 2026 A.I.Rs!
Inspired by the Indigenous concept of rematriation and the liminal spaces where nature and culture intersect, Portal asks: How do we tend to the stories the land holds? What rituals can we perform to mend the fractures between human and more-than-human worlds? The exhibition unfolds as a temporary sanctuary for collective remembering, where the act of gathering around an altar, a shared meal, or a collaborative sound piece becomes a form of ecological kinship.
The artists in Portal approach ritual not as a relic of the past, but as a living methodology. Their works range from site-specific land art that maps invisible histories onto the terrain of Governors Island to soundscapes that evoke the voices of vanished ecosystems. Some pieces are ephemeral, designed to dissolve back into the earth; others are participatory, asking visitors to contribute their own gestures of care.
