​AISO Talks: A Conversation With Guido van Rossum

​The creator of Python, live on stage in Amsterdam, the city where the language was born.

​In late 1989, a programmer at CWI started a side project over the Christmas break to keep himself busy. He called it Python.

​You've almost certainly used something built on it in your everyday life, whether or not you've ever written a line of code yourself. Three and a half decades on, that "side project" has become one of the most widely used programming languages in the world - it powers most of modern AI and data science, and it's where a huge share of the world starts their journey with programming. Guido led it as its "Benevolent Dictator for Life" for 27 years before handing it to the community that grew around it.

​Now he's coming back to the city where it all began. AISO, together with Amsterdam AI, is bringing Guido to CREA for an hour-long fireside chat, followed by an audience Q&A and a networking session afterwards.

​We might get into what it takes to build something that lasts, how the culture of open source has shifted over the years, or where AI is taking the craft of programming. Wherever it goes, no Python experience is needed to follow along, and if you write code, contribute to open source, or work on AI yourself, there's plenty here for you too.

​Come with a question in mind. There won't be time for all of them, but the conversation is sharper when the room has been thinking ahead, and a few will make it to the stage.
