About Event

BERLIN QUANTUM community event organized by OpTecBB e.V. and hosted by Leap Berlin.

BarBQ is an open networking event designed to bring the community together and foster the exchange of opinions and ideas in the quantum field among students, founders, scientists, as well as technically and non-technically interested individuals. The event is aimed at a broad audience who wants to learn more about quantum and the quantum community in Berlin.

BarBQ September: Sensing Quantum Randomness

In this BarBQ edition we want to dig in into the effects of Quantum beyond the physics lab and move towards human perception. Join us to discuss Sensing Quantum Randomness motivated by the current work of Prof. Sebastian Klotz (Musikwissenschaft- HU Berlin).

Sensing (Quantum-) Randomness

Can listeners distinguish micro-variations in beats which are generated by quantum random number generators (QRNG) from variations based on pseudo or classical randomness by PRNGs or electronic noise-based Random Number Generators? Guest Researcher Matthias Zoeller and musicologist Sebastian Klotz from Humboldt University present the results of a listening experiment led by music psychologist Mats Küssner which they hope to expand to a larger project. They seek to find out if there are intuitive ways to sense quantum randomness in the domain of sound resp. music and, at a more advanced stage of this Art & Science Project, in the audio-visual domain in an extended-reality installation.

Here are some key challenges: which mapping strategies should be chosen, i.e. which musical parameters should be exposed to randomized processes?

How do perceptual and aesthetic specifics of musical genres (from J.S. Bach to electronica) affect the outcome?

Are there perceptual effects of randomizes stimuli in digitally produced sound/music plus visuals that can only be achieved by quantum randomness? If so, how could non-classical frameworks like Quantum Physics and Endophysics be applied to understand these phenomena?
