a beginner-friendly laser cutting workshop at a creative makerspace that supports 2am ideas
got something physical you’d like to make? or have itchy hands that just make u feel like creating something? :D
come join our beginner-friendly laser cutting workshop where u learn how to turn flat materials (cardboards, plywoods etc) into 3D objects of your own!!
like it could be a tree. a tiny spaceship. a phone stand. a basketball hoop. anything
and no experience is needed!! just bring ur curiosity and creative energy
who it is for
great for beginners and curious creatives interested in making, design or fabrication
don’t need prior experience with laser cutting or digital design
it’s a rly good starting point for people who have ideas they would like to build but are unsure how to begin using workshop tools. (also base templates provided so its easy to follow and learn)
what you’ll learn through the making process:
understand how a 3D object can be broken down into flat components.
explore how material thickness, dimensions and connections affect whether an object fits together and stands securely
practise testing and refining an idea through inexpensive physical prototypes.
gain introductory experience translating a design into a digital file for fabrication, with facilitator guidance.
recognise where laser cutting fits within a wider creative process and develop confidence to explore workshop tools in future projects.
what you’ll take away and bring home
apart from bringing home the small plywood object designed and assembled by you
you’d have your own sketches, cardboard prototype and digital design file as a record of how your idea develops as you experiment
you’ll also leave with an experience of working through an unfamiliar making process: trying an idea → identifying what needs to change → using tools and support to move it forward.
but impt disclaimer!!
same-day completion of plywood objects will depend on the group size, design complexity and available cutting capacity.
how it works:
you’ll be introduced to examples of objects constructed from flat parts and consider how shapes can connect to create volume and stability.
also! a guided introduction covers what laser cutting can do, its basic limitations and the safety considerations involved so u actually learn how to use the tools too
Workshop details:
24 october 4pm to 8pm
Total of 4 hours including a 1-hour dinner + fabrication break
For anyone who’s wanted to make something but didn’t know where to start. Come with an idea, or find one along the way.
You’ll work towards a small, self-supporting plywood object, with your sketches, cardboard prototype and digital file to keep experimenting afterwards.
come make a small thing. see where it takes you. :-)
