​Outside the United States, 20% of new cars sold are fully electric, and roughly 70% of them are made in China. Here at home, it's about 6%, partly because electrification has hardened into a partisan fault line: one party champions it, the other campaigns against it, and federal policy has been thrown into full reverse.

The consequences reach well beyond climate, even as transportation remains America's single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Automakers that can't build compelling, affordable EVs won't survive the global market past this decade, and a crippled auto industry plus deepened oil dependence is a national security problem as much as an environmental one.

Power Trains and Party Lines brings together voices from across the political spectrum to ask how entrepreneurs, investors and thought leaders can use their platforms, capital and influence to de-politicize electric vehicles.

​Rina Shah is a geopolitical adviser, strategist, & political commentator based in Washington, DC. She previously served in the leadership of the offices of two Republican Members of Congress, where her portfolio included energy & environment issues. She appears weekly on a variety of domestic & international media, advocating for commonsense federal policies and systems reforms. The only woman on a 2013 low-carbon economy tour of Germany as a guest of their Green Party—and an EV driver since 2018—she approaches electrification with a bipartisan, national-security lens. She founded At the Gates to expand civic and economic opportunity.

​Albert is a veteran in the clean technology space, having spent seven years at Tesla, Inc., most recently as the Lead for Public Policy and Business Development in the Eastern and Midwestern United States. Prior to its acquisition by Tesla, he was also the Deputy Director of Policy and Electricity Markets at SolarCity.
