For Future Generations: Why San Diego Climate Researchers are Studying Solar Geoengineering
This event brings local climate researchers and the San Diego community together for an honest, science-grounded conversation about solar geoengineering— an emerging and hotly debated approach to addressing some of the impacts of climate change. Solar geoengineering refers to a set of proposed, large-scale methods to intentionally reflect more sunlight back into space to cool the planet.
The session will explore why researchers are studying these approaches now and what that research could mean for future generations facing a changing climate. As research and public attention grow, so do important questions about what these approaches could and could not do, what risks and uncertainties they carry, and who should have a say in how they are researched and governed.
This session is jointly presented by the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego. DSG is a U.S.-based nonprofit working internationally to broaden access to information about solar geoengineering and elevate the voices of those most impacted by climate change, and SIO is one of the world’s leading earth science research centers.
The session will cover:
Why we are talking about solar geoengineering
What different types of solar geoengineering are being researched
What Scripps researchers are learning about it
Why proper global governance of this is so important
How it fits into the broader climate portfolio
Attendees will hear directly from local researchers and practitioners (from the Ricke Lab, Giving Green, and more) and have the opportunity to ask questions. Join us at the UCSD Climate Action Lab to learn more on October 2nd. A light vegetarian lunch will be provided.
Transportation
We encourage attendees to take public transportation or carpool where possible. UCSD is served by the Blue Line Trolley, which now runs directly onto campus with stops near the Scholars Drive area. There are also several MTS bus routes serving La Jolla, including Route 30 (UTC, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Old Town, downtown San Diego) and Route 41 (VA Hospital, UTC, Clairemont, Fashion Valley). The closest option is Scholars Parking Lot at 9655 Scholars Dr N, La Jolla, CA 92093. Visitor spots (marked with a V) run for $4.50/hour with a $36 daily maximum.
Finding the Climate Action Lab
It can be a bit tricky to find the room if you've never visited the Climate Action Lab, but this tutorial helps: https://luma.com/y4e7ssgg.
If you are coming from Scholars Drive N, head up the stairs and look for the big windows and wooden benches in a small pavilion past the grassy area. If you find yourself at the food outlet Fan-Fan, keeping walking west down the walkway and make an immediate right.
