In his newest book, Doctorow introduces the "reverse centaur," a worker pressed into service to a machine on its terms instead of being helped by their tools. He uses that idea to examine the hype surrounding AI, who benefits from it, and what might be worth keeping when the current bubble bursts. Doctorow uses AI in his own work and finds the technology useful, which gives the book a sharp but practical edge as it asks how we get to a future where the tools work for us.
