17an: Sustaining Freedom
Jalan • Maén • Makan (We Walk • We Play • We Eat)
Celebrate Indonesian Independence Day through nature, creativity, and food. Join Kultum—Kultur Bertumbuh and Epping Forest Heritage Trust for a community gathering inspired by Indonesian traditions of walking, gathering, and sharing meals. Through Jalan (Walk), Maén (Play), and Makan (Eat), we will explore Epping Forest, reflect on our relationship with nature, co-create ideas for greener public spaces, and enjoy a low-waste, plant-based potluck together.
📅 Saturday, 22 August 2026 | 🕚 11:00–14:00
📍 Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford
6 Ranger's Road, London, E4 7QH
🍱 Bring your own plant-based dish, utensils, and water bottle.
During Jalan, we will discover the forest through a guided walk using Kultum's Jalan app, reflecting on accessibility, belonging, and our connection with nature. Maén transforms these observations into a collaborative mading (Indonesian wall magazine), where everyone can contribute ideas for safer and more welcoming parks and forests, supporting biodiversity, and caring for nature through everyday actions. We are also launching Makan, inspired by Indonesian roots and food heritage. You are most welcome to bring a plant-based dish to share (optional), along with your reusable utensils, a labelled ingredients list, and a container for any leftovers. Whether you are a regular forest visitor or simply curious to spend time outdoors with Indonesian theme, everyone is welcome!
This activity is part of 'Epping Forest Heritage for All,’ a three-year project made possible thanks to the funding support from Heritage Fund. The project aims to inspire people from all backgrounds with the rich heritage of the Forest, foster a greater sense of belonging to the Forest community, and a shared feeling that the heritage of the Forest is for all to enjoy, celebrate, and protect now and for generations to come.
