AI for Disasters, Energy, Agriculture & Water: Building AI Systems for the Physical World
AI is rapidly transforming how we understand and interact with the Earth system, from forecasting floods and heatwaves to improving agriculture, water management, energy resilience, and disaster preparedness.
This talk explores how foundation models, diffusion models, digital twins, and hybrid physics-AI systems can move beyond benchmarks and become real-world infrastructure. We'll discuss how AI is enabling high-resolution weather forecasting, improving flood prediction, supporting resilient power grids, helping farmers make better decisions, and making water management more intelligent.
The session will also feature live demonstrations of several AI products built at AIR lab, including AirCast (high-resolution weather forecasting), AirCast Delhi (AI-powered air quality and weather forecasts), AirCast S2S (extended-range forecasting), LLM Water, LLM Farmer, Kentucky Highway Disasters, NCDEX Rain Mumbai Arena, and DeepAssimilate.
The next generation of AI will not only generate text; it will become a decision-making layer optimised for critical infrastructure that helps societies anticipate disasters, optimise energy systems, improve food security, and manage water resources.
About the speaker:
Manmeet Singh is an Assistant Professor at Western Kentucky University, where he leads research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, weather, climate, disaster science, agriculture, energy, and water systems. He is also a Research Affiliate at The University of Texas at Austin.
He has authored over 60 research publications including papers at NeurIPS, Science Advances, Scientific Data, and Environmental Research Letters. His work has been featured by Scientific American, Nature News, CBS News, and was part of the Paris Olympics 2024 Research Demonstration Project for AI weather forecasting.
Beyond research, he has built open AI products including AirCast, LLM Water, LLM Farmer, and DeepAssimilate, with the goal of making AI useful for solving real-world environmental challenges.
