U of T Scarborough's Harmony Commons: Explore a Passive House at Scale
Explore Canada's largest passive house of its kind, the Harmony Commons Student Residence, at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and see how the passive house standard can be attained for large-scale building developments. Join us for a guided tour of Harmony Commons and the nearby Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail.
Harmony Commons is a cutting-edge passive house designed to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency and featuring state-of-the-art design and materials that work together to reduce its environmental footprint, while providing a comfortable and healthy living environment. The goal of a passive house is to create a comfortable living environment using the energy from natural sources, such as sunlight and body heat, instead of relying only on traditional heating and cooling systems.
The Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail is a fully-accessible trail linking the UTSC Campus with the City’s ravine system along a 500m serpentine trail that includes a 20m drop in elevation by utilizing gently sloping concrete pathways and cantilevered wood decks. Located adjacent to an environmentally significant area, the Ma Moosh Ka Win Valley Trail contributes to the protection and enhancement of the surrounding natural areas by providing a safe and defined path of travel for users to traverse the steep valley wall.
