When Do We Call It Art? An AI Art Salon and Artist Tour at "Ancestors of the Future"
Can AI be creative? Who owns an AI-generated image? And what changes when an artist stitches, paints, and works with it by hand? When does a thing becomes art? IS there a new definition of art?
Join artist, designer, and AI researcher Ulrike Kerber for a tour of Ancestors of the Future, followed by an open conversation about art and creativity in the age of AI.
The exhibition brings together around 60 works created through experiments with AI and physical materials. Ulrike has stitched, painted, laminated, and transformed prints as a way of exploring her own relationship with AI. What happens when a super-fast process meets slow hand-craft?
We’ll begin with a 30-minute artist-led tour, looking at selected works and the choices, surprises, and questions behind them.
Then we’ll gather for a 60-minute salon conversation. Together, we’ll explore questions such as:
Can AI contribute something original, and how do we recognize creativity?
When does an AI-generated image become art? Does working on it by hand change our answer?
Who can claim ownership or authorship when AI is involved?
What should artists consider about the energy and resources AI uses?
You don’t need to be an artist or know how AI works. Curiosity, questions, and different perspectives are welcome.
