Cyanotype Workshop by Nathan Tan
In this cyanotype workshop, participants will engage with the process through a hands-on approach from the very beginning. The session introduces the medium before guiding participants through coating paper with the cyanotype solution, leading into the most creative stage where they are encouraged to draw, compose and experiment freely to create their own unique works.
Throughout the workshop, examples of possible outcomes will be shared to help manage expectations, while still allowing space for open-ended exploration. Participants may incorporate a variety of methods and materials, including expressive brushstrokes, hand-drawn imagery, printed designs on transparency film and found objects such as dried botanicals to build their compositions.
Once the compositions are complete, they will be arranged and pressed before being exposed under sunlight for UV activation. This process stabilizes the exposed areas, after which the prints are rinsed to wash away the unexposed solution, revealing the final image. The works are then dried and prepared for framing.
Framing is an essential part of the workshop, as it ensures that each participant leaves with a finished and well-presented artwork ready to be displayed in their home. This emphasise not only the making of the artwork but also the importance of caring for and preserving it in a sustainable and thoughtful way.
Beyond the technical process, the workshop encourages participants to exercise their creativity while gaining insight into artistic practices. By sharing perspectives on the artist’s process, the session aims to foster a deeper appreciation for art and the labour behind it. It also hopes to inspire participants to support local artists and develop an interest in collecting artworks.
Ultimately, the workshop promotes good practices in handling and maintaining paper-based works, highlighting how proper framing and storage can enhance appreciation and longevity. It is designed as both a creative experience and an introduction to mindful art engagement.
