​Japan’s HealthTech sector is going through a major transition. The country’s aging population is creating urgent demand for smarter healthcare: AI-assisted diagnostics, remote monitoring, and digital tools that ease the strain on hospitals and caregivers. At the same time, much of Japan’s healthcare technology infrastructure is itself aging, pushing the government and industry to invest heavily in digital transformation. Navigating this change isn’t simple: Japan’s regulatory framework ensures safety and quality but can also slow the pace of innovation. This session looks at how these forces shape Japan’s HealthTech future, and where new opportunities are emerging.

​Joshua Owoyemi is Co-founder & CEO of Antler-backed ModAstera, a Tokyo-based healthtech AI company building the Medical AI Engineering Agent (MAEA), a platform that automates data annotation, model training, deployment, and regulatory documentation for medical applications. He earned a PhD in Information Science from Tohoku University and spent 5+ years as an AI research engineer in biotech, where he created SmilesFormer, a language model for molecular design and optimization. At ModAstera, Joshua partners with medical researchers and device makers to compress AI development timelines from months to days while meeting healthcare compliance requirements.
