The Listening Room
The Listening Room
A 5-week creative sound series in Hornsey, 212 Middle Lane, London
The Listening Room is a five-week, small-group workshop exploring how everyday sounds can become music.
Through listening, field recording, and simple sound techniques, we’ll record, shape, and transform the sounds around us into original material.
Who it’s for
– Complete beginners (no prior experience needed)
– Musicians or producers looking for new approaches
– Artists interested in working with sound
– Anyone curious about listening differently
What happens in each session
Each session is guided and hands-on. A typical session includes:
– a short listening exercise to tune into the environment
– recording sounds in the local area (equipment provided)
– working with those sounds using simple music software
– experimenting with shaping them into textures, rhythms, or instruments
– listening back and sharing ideas as a group
No prior experience is needed. The focus is on listening, curiosity, and experimentation rather than technical expertise. You’ll be introduced to simple tools and processes that help you develop your own approach to sound.
What you’ll leave with
– your own field recordings
– a short sound piece or sketch
– a set of techniques you can continue using
– a new way of listening to your environment

About the Facilitator
Elisha Lewis is a sound artist, music producer, and educator exploring listening as a creative practice. His work spans sound design, performance, installation, and workshops, often using field recordings and environmental sound as musical material.
He has led workshops with organisations including Historic Royal Palaces, Hear Me Out, Clod Ensemble, and ICMP, working with participants across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. His EP Hackney Rooms, commissioned by Clod Ensemble, grew out of field recording workshops with 18–25 year olds in Hackney, drawing on the sounds of their domestic spaces and shaping them into an electronic release.
His approach prioritises attention, curiosity, and experimentation, creating spaces where sound can be explored without technical overwhelm. Examples of his music and sound work can be heard at www.soundcloud.com/electricfarmer
