About the Project
The San Francisco Bay is increasingly vulnerable to harmful algal blooms and fish kills driven by nutrient pollution and climate change. Reducing nitrogen from wastewater treatment plant discharges is one of the region’s most urgent water quality priorities.
Oro Loma Sanitary District, one of the Bay Area’s 37 treatment plants, has been an early adopter of innovative solutions. In 2021, Oro Loma implemented Microvi’s MicroNiche Engineering™ biocatalyst technology for sidestream ammonia treatment.
Since installation, the system has: • Treated over 165 million gallons of wastewater • Removed more than 400,000 pounds of nitrogen • Demonstrated a low-cost, high-efficiency biological approach to nutrient removal
