About Event

Learn CAD modeling, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping to make a desk lamp in a day 💡

Build your own functional desk lamp in this full day workshop, combining CAD design in Fusion 360, 3D printing, electronics prototyping, and embedded programming.

This is a hands-on build class inside the Desk Job Design Lab prototyping studio in Industry City. You’ll work like a real product designer: starting with constraints and components, prototyping quickly, and leaving with a lamp that actually works.

Class size is capped at 4 people so you get real support, tools access, and a true build experience.

🛠️ THE PROJECT

You’ll choose from a set of provided components and build a lamp around them. Options include:

  • LED strips, rings, diffusers, and modules

  • pre-built LED components (including repurposed options like IKEA lamp parts)

  • switches, dimming options, power components

  • optional sensors (depending on what you want your lamp to do)

Then you’ll design a compatible housing and mounting system so everything fits cleanly and feels intentional.

🎓 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

CAD + Fabrication (Fusion 360 + 3D Printing)

  • CAD modeling in Fusion 360

  • designing for fit + tolerances (mounts, adapters, enclosures)

  • preparing parts for 3D printing

Electronics Prototyping

  • breadboard prototyping and iteration

  • selecting components and building a circuit

  • safe wiring practices for LED builds

Soldering

  • soldering fundamentals + best practices

  • assembling durable connections for your final build

Embedded Programming

  • programming with the Arduino IDE

  • writing simple firmware to control LEDs and sensors

  • testing, troubleshooting, and iteration

✨ 3D-PRINTING WORKFLOW

We’ll design and prep parts for printing during class. Depending on print time, your part will either:

  • print during the session, or

  • be printed after class for pickup (no extra cost)

🥯 FOOD & BREAKS

  • Breakfast provided (coffee + pastries from Colson’s Patisserie)

  • Lunch break at Industry City (Japanese Market)

🙋 WHO THIS IS FOR

Beginners are welcome — no prior CAD, electronics, or programming experience required. This class is taught from the ground up and intentionally small so you get hands-on guidance throughout.

🎁 WHAT'S INCLUDED

All materials + tools are included, including:

  • sensors + LED components

  • Arduino-based electronics

  • soldering tools

  • 3D printing materials
