About Event

Did you know that Canada’s crop potential is shifting as the climate changes?

Tahini Ice: Growing Food and Creat in a Changing Climate

"Tahini Ice" is an event that starts with a paradoxical premise: making tahini from sesame seeds grown in Canada's ice prairies. This seemingly absurd idea serves as a starting point for a serious discussion on several critical topics related to climate change, agriculture, and community. 🇨🇦🌱

Facilitated by professionals and industry experts, but enabled by passionate citizens, Tahini Ice will explore how a changing climate is altering agricultural land use and creating opportunities for new crops in unexpected places. Furthermore, we explore emerging topics in ag-tech that can support a sustainable food system within Canada.

Participants will brainstorm how to create policies and support systems that enable the practical application of this knowledge, ultimately fostering a more resilient and diverse local food system. This will be done through round table discussions.

Round Table Discussion Topics:

  • Agricultural Adaptation: Discussing which traditional crops, like sesame, could potentially be grown in new Canadian climates and the challenges involved in adapting them.

  • Enabling Technology: Exploring the technological innovations needed to support new agricultural practices, such as specialized machinery or climate-controlled farming techniques.

  • Policy Frameworks: Brainstorming what government policies could be put in place to support small-scale, diversified farming and the transfer of traditional knowledge.

  • Community and Knowledge Transfer: Examining how immigrant communities can be empowered to share their agricultural expertise and how to create networks for knowledge exchange.

  • Food System Resilience: Focusing on the importance of diversifying food sources to enhance climate resilience and reduce dependency on a few staple crops.

The "Tahini Ice" event aims to be a collaborative and forward-thinking forum that turns a whimsical concept into a tangible plan for a sustainable and diverse agricultural future. 💡🌾
