Event Description

AI and digital tools are rapidly expanding access to mental health support, from chat-based services to helplines and decision-support systems. For many countries, especially those with limited clinical resources, these tools offer a pathway to reach millions who would otherwise go without care.

But as these systems scale, a critical question emerges: how do we expand access without losing the human core of mental health support?

This session explores how governments and organizations can build national mental health systems that integrate AI, digital platforms, and community-based care. Moving beyond pilots, the focus will be on designing infrastructure that is scalable, equitable, and grounded in real-world delivery.

We will examine the role of AI-in-the-loop systems, where technology supports but does not replace human care, and how these approaches can generate real-time insights into population mental health while improving service delivery.

At the same time, the discussion will address key risks, including bias, privacy, clinical safety, and the ethical implications of relying on AI in deeply human domains. What safeguards are needed to ensure these systems are trusted, inclusive, and responsible?

Bringing together policymakers, practitioners, and technologists, this session will focus on how to build digital mental health systems that are both scalable and deeply human.
