About Event

In-person craft intensive in East Austin exploring documentary poetics, archives, and research through Susan Briante, Muriel Rukeyser, and Don Mee Choi. Hosted by East Austin Writing Project (Austin, TX).

Full Description

How do poets turn research, records, and public documents into urgent, living poems? In this craft-intensive workshop with East Austin Writing Project, we’ll look at how three landmark documentary poetic works: Defacing the Monument by Susan Briante, The Book of the Dead by Muriel Rukeyser, and DMZ Colony by Don Mee Choi transform archives into art.

Together in East Austin (Austin, TX), we’ll explore how these writers work with:

• Government files, court records, news reports, and testimony

• Maps, photographs, and historical archives

• Translation, collage, and visual/textual layering

• Ethical questions of witnessing, representation, and proximity

We’ll read short excerpts, break down key craft elements: voice, structure, repetition, typography, white space, image, and research notes on the page and then move into guided writing time.

Well then critique one writers’s submitted work. This work is sent beforehand for participants to pre-read.

This workshop is perfect for:

• Poets and prose writers interested in documentary poetics and research-based writing

• Writers working with grief, memory, place, migration, or political histories

• Artists in Austin’s arts & culture community who want to blend research, activism, and lyric.

Hosted by: East Austin Writing Project – a literary arts community offering Poetry Club, Craft Intensives, Critique groups, and Subculture Lit book club in Austin, TX.
