Kupiihaaw Mataayum (Autumn Gathering)
Kupiihaaw Mataayum (Autumn Gathering) at Old Town State Park. Join us on Monday, October 6 at Old Town State Park—ancestral homelands of the Kumeyaay Nation—for a day of learning, reflection, and hands-on activities that honor Kumeyaay relationships to land and water.
As guests on Kumeyaay Lands, we are invited to listen, engage, and reconnect with place in ways that support shared efforts toward coastal resilience.
Hosted by Tipey Joa Native Warriors, the event will feature Kumeyaay basket weaving and clay pot demonstrations throughout the day and self-guided tours of the native garden and outdoor public gathering space, Iipay ~ Tipai Kumeyaay Mut Niihepok (Land of the First People), featuring a large round mosaic representing the summer sky and Kumeyaay cosmology. Attendees will also have the opportunity to plant native plant species and interact with interpretive signage, Hear Our Names.
This event is the third site in the 'Hear Our Names' project, which aims to integrate Indigenous knowledge, participation, and leadership in climate adaptation planning and stewardship. Other sites include Kendall Frost Marsh and Sweetwater Marsh Refuge.
Thank you to the California State Coastal Conservancy and San Diego Foundation for their support.
