The Beverley Discussion 2026: Environmental Sustainability in Australian Art, with Annabel Keenan and Aruna D’Souza
The American Australian Association invites you to join 2025 Beverley Art Writers Travel Grant Recipient Annabel Keenan as she shares insights from her recent travel to Australia. Keenan visited Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide, meeting with artists, curators, and writers to learn more about how they implement environmentally sustainable operations. A highlight of her trip was a visit to Bundanon, a museum and artist homestead on a remote nature reserve south of Sydney. In addition to centering sustainability, the museum offered a case study in fire-resistant design, and gave Keenan the opportunity to experience Australian wildlife firsthand, as she stayed overnight on the reserve.
Annabel will be joined in conversation by New York-based writer and critic Aruna D’Souza. Her work appears regularly in 4Columns, where she is a member of the editorial advisory board, and she is a contributor to The New York Times and Hyperallergic. Her most recent book, published in 2024, is Imperfect Solidarities (Floating Opera Press). D’Souza received the Beverley Art Writers Travel Grant in 2024.
The Beverley is a USD $10,000 travel grant awarded annually to an established American freelance writer who has an outstanding reputation for art journalism. The purpose of the grant is to foster cultural exchange, discussion and coverage of the Australian contemporary visual arts community and its programs.
