ClimateHack Amsterdam: Decarbonising Textiles & Apparel ๐
โYou're invited to ClimateHack Amsterdam: Decarbonising Textiles & Apparel
โOn 19 July, the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation kicks in, banning large companies from destroying unsold clothing, accessories and footwear across the EU. No more quietly landfilling or burning stock nobody bought.
Roughly 4 to 9% of unsold textiles in Europe get destroyed every year before a single person wears them, and that waste alone generates around 5.6 million tonnes of CO2, which is almost what Sweden emits in a year. Europeans now consume 19kg of textiles per person a year, the highest on record, and textiles rank fifth among twelve household consumption categories for raw material use, emissions, water and land use.
Decarbonising this sector needs an entire ecosystem that's more than a disposal ban: new materials, cleaner production, circular design and tech to make all of it scalable.
โJoin us as we spotlight Dutch innovation and initiatives tackling textile waste and emissions head-on.
