The Electrification of Mobility, Autonomy and Implications for the Grid

Presented by Energy Innovation Hub TX and Electra, in partnership with CleanTX

The electrification of mobility is arguably the most significant trend driving the global energy transition. With EVs adding 830 TWh to global load by 2030 (far more than data centers) the electrification of transport is reshaping the grid. As the global fleet trades hydrocarbons for electrons, the grid is effectively adding  ~70,000 new mobile batteries behind-the-meter every day. This creates significant challenges for the infrastructure and systems required to manage this new, dynamic load. But this also creates exciting opportunities to reimagine distributed energy solutions, decentralized networks and flexibility at the grid edge.

This transition is not uniform; Distinct requirements are emerging across consumer, commercial, and long-haul segments. From consumer focused fast-charging hubs to third-party hosting models, or electric freight solutions and autonomous trucks, the industry is moving beyond simple hardware to a variety of business models and strategies. As the space evolves, players  must navigate localized grid constraints, diverse customer preferences, interconnection queues, and site-acquisition challenges.

The intersection of vehicles and the utility remains the most critical frontier. Large-scale fleet depots present significant interconnection and transformer challenges, they also offer the potential for grid resilience through flexibility solutions. Residential EV charging potentially strains the low-voltage grid, but managed EV charging creates massive potential for demand-response, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) dispatch and other Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) models.

This panel convenes leading executives from the space to discuss how these emerging technologies and business models are transforming a major new load into a flexible grid asset.
