Awen Synesthesia Series Vol. 3: Viola Duo
The Synesthesia Series is Awen’s ongoing inquiry into how our senses can dialogue with one another. Following our explorations of solo instrument and scent, our third volume turns toward the nature of dialogue: the interplay between two violas, two perspectives, and a curated sequence of scents.
The viola is an instrument of particular depth, often said to mirror the registers of the human voice. In this duet concert, the music becomes a conversation in wood and air; moving between symmetry, tension, and shared resolution. 🎻
For every musical piece performed, a specific fragrance has been curated. These scent infusions are designed to unfold alongside the music, allowing the olfactory notes to shade and heighten the emotional character of each composition. 🌿
About the Performers
Violists Dilhan Kantas and Heri Shin first met in the pit of the Komische Oper Berlin, but their real story began later at a rehearsal with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. What started as shared musical ground slowly turned into a close friendship, built on deep listening, mutual respect, and a running comedy of errors. Dilan is known for speaking very quietly in rehearsals; Heri is known for confidently guessing what was said. Somehow, the frequent mishearings only made them more curious about each other. Over the years at the RSB, they have shared a music stand countless times - navigating both the grandeur of the repertoire and the simple joy of making music side by side. In this Synesthesia concert, just the two of them on stage, they share that journey: a duet shaped by friendship, affection, and a profound musical trust.
