Can AI Explain What We Value in Art?
As part of Ox Tech Week, ArtIntel's CEO Tina Maslakova joins Aurora Kapo for a conversation on how the value of art is formed, and what AI reveals about the hidden structures behind collective human judgment.
ArtIntel is an Oxford University spinout co-founded by Tina Maslakova and professor Philip Torr. The company applies AI and data intelligence to contemporary art, developing models to evaluate and forecast pricing, as well as analyse liquidity and risk.
Positioned at the forefront of AI research, ArtIntel brings a sophisticated, data-driven approach to one of the least transparent asset classes. The technical team is led by Professor Torr and includes ML engineers and computer scientists at Oxford, while the advisory board features senior specialists from Sotheby's and Deloitte.
Bringing together contemporary art, artificial intelligence and value theory, the session explores research into how meaning, institutional validation, narrative and capital interact to shape cultural and financial value. Rather than asking whether machines can understand beauty, the discussion examines how AI can make visible the complex systems through which societies assign significance, legitimacy and worth.
