AI, Data, and Democracy: Who Shapes the Future?
Event Description
As AI and digital technologies increasingly shape public life, they are also reshaping democracy itself—how decisions are made, whose voices are heard, and how power is distributed. While much of the conversation focuses on risks, less attention is given to a critical question: how can technology strengthen democratic participation rather than undermine it?
This discussion explores how data, AI, and civic tech can be designed and governed in ways that center public voice, accountability, and legitimacy. From youth-led perspectives to participatory data systems, we will examine how lived experience and citizen input can become structured, influential forces in policymaking and institutional decision-making.
We will also explore the role of philanthropy, public-private collaboration, and new types of infrastructure in supporting this shift. As technology continues to evolve, this session asks how we can ensure that democratic values are not just protected—but embedded into the systems shaping our future.

Discussion Questions
How can AI and digital technologies be designed to strengthen democratic participation and public trust, rather than weaken them?
What would meaningful “participatory data systems” look like in practice, and how can citizen voice shape decision-making at scale?
What role can youth, civic tech, and public-private collaboration play in building more accountable and inclusive digital systems?
What kinds of funding and infrastructure are needed to ensure technology serves democracy, not just markets?
Location & access
Accessibility matters deeply to us, and we do our best to choose spaces that reflect that. That said, some of our Oxford venues are in historic buildings without lifts. This room is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users, those with mobility challenges, or anyone needing step-free access.
