Every year, thousands of developers of free and open-source software from all over the world gather at FOSDEM. For two weeks around this event – from the 26th of January to the 6th of February - Commons Hub Brussels is hosting an Open Source Village. A place for open source communities to meet, collaborate, and co-create.

On the 30th of January, in partnership with Europe MédiaLab in partnership and Eurosky, we are organising a hackathon to explore the world of decentralized media.

AT Protocol, Bluesky, Nostr, Mastodon, Lens, … we’ve seen many new alternatives emerging to move away from centralized platforms.

This hackathon will bring together open source developers that want to play with those new technologies, and people working at European media that are curious and want to explore alternative platforms. Which ones to trust? What are the needs of existing European media players to embrace those new platforms? Those are some of the questions that we will explore. Plus whatever you are in the mood for that could contribute to a vibrant European decentralized media sphere we can all rely on without interference from foreign interests.

A hackathon is a time-bound, intensive event where people (programmers, designers, etc.) collaborate to solve a problem, build a product, or create a prototype, often in a competitive, marathon-style setting lasting from a day to a week.

This mini-hackathon has 15 tables, each made up of 3-4 participants. Ideally, every group should include 5 tech experts and one person from a business or policy background. The aim is to enhance a discussion on the features that Trusted European Platforms should have, not to arrange something already complete. (What are the alternatives? Where do we want to go?)
