Earth Day: DIRT Screening + Bayview 3rd Community Build Session
Join us for an Earth Day gathering centered on land, community, and collective action.
The evening features a screening of DIRT, an award-winning documentary directed by David Evans, Maria Liedholm Holter, and Catherine Williamson Duncumb. Shot on 16mm in the mid-1990s, DIRT is an ode to New York’s East Village community gardens, following three individuals navigating personal struggles while cultivating spaces of life, resistance, and care within the city. The film received recognition at the San Francisco International Film Festival, where it won in the category of Society and Culture.
Ahead of the screening, the event will host an Earth Day-centered gathering aligned with the Bayview 3rd Community Activation: Unity—a resident-led effort to curate “3rd spaces” along the Bayview 3rd Street corridor and strengthen connection across Bayview’s community with residents, local small businesses, and District 10 neighbors.

This event also connects to ongoing tenant organizing efforts in San Francisco, including the rent strike at 907 Valencia supported by the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco (https://www.hrcsf.org/907valencia).

Earth Day Activity + Bayview 3rd Community Build Session
The event functions as both an Earth Day-centered activity and a focused build session rooted in the Bayview 3rd Community Activation.
This session supports ongoing Bayview efforts including weekly 3rd Street community cleanups, neighborhood beautification, and the curation of “3rd spaces” connecting residents, small businesses, D10 neighbors and community partners.
This event also extends to support active tenant organizing efforts, including the 907 Valencia rent strike, where tenants are collectively organizing around housing conditions and accountability.
During this time, attendees can participate in the Earth Day Art activity while a parallel live, collaborative build session takes place.
This working session focuses on organizing and strengthening real support systems across both Bayview community initiatives and tenant organizing efforts—supporting cleanup coordination, outreach, communication, and shared infrastructure that connects environmental action with housing stability.
This is not a traditional hackathon, but a working session grounded in real conditions, where participants contribute directly to systems that support both third spaces and housing.

Collective Wellbeing
Fresh, seasonal juice made from fruits and vegetables sourced from the Heart of the City Farmers’ Market will be available, along with light appetizers prepared from ingredients gathered from local vendors at the market in Civic Center’s UN Plaza.
