About Event

Around the world, democratic systems are under strain. Civic space is shrinking, polarization is rising, and trust in institutions is eroding. Yet alongside these challenges, new forms of solidarity, participation, and collaboration are emerging, often led by communities, grassroots actors, and those most affected by conflict and exclusion.

This discussion explores what it takes to renew democracy in practice, not just in theory. How can principles like agency, solidarity, and participation be translated into real action that strengthens civic life? What can we learn from behavioral science, peacebuilding, and grassroots movements about how people engage with democracy today?

We will also examine the structural side of renewal, including how to fund and support the “missing middle” of organizations and initiatives that sustain democratic systems without becoming partisan. From protecting civic space and human rights defenders to reimagining democratic narratives in the face of populism, this session invites participants to explore what the next chapter of democracy could look like, and how to build it together.
