Weaving a Willow Apple Picker

​Harvest fruit from your trees with a tool you made yourself.

​Last summer, after a very entertaining afternoon watching my six-year-old collect apples using a clamp from her grandpa’s wood shop, I was determined to find a way to weave a willow apple picker.

​I found a few modern references, but no clear historical ones. So this design comes from a season of experimenting, using, and adjusting the first picker we wove.

​In this workshop, you will learn to weave your own willow apple picker, designed for harvesting apples, cherries, and other small fruit.

​We will work with locally harvested willow to create a lightweight, functional tool that extends your reach while remaining easy to handle.

​Design Notes:

• ​This apple picker is just over 1 metre in length. For us, this has been a good working size.

• ​A stake can be added through the handle if you would like to extend the reach further.

• ​It includes three replaceable spikes for fruit that needs a bit more coaxing. These are especially useful when harvesting cherries.
