We have the great pleasure to host Carlo Ratti at Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism - Polytechnic University of Tirana (UPT), where he will deliver a Lectio Magistralis on "Senseable Cities".

The way we live, work, and play is very different today than it was just a few decades ago, thanks in large part to a network of connectivity that now encompasses most people on the planet. In a similar way, today we are at the beginning of a new technological revolution: the Internet is entering the physical space – the traditional domain of architecture and design – becoming an “Internet of Things” or IoT. As such, it is opening the door to a variety of applications that – in a similar way to what happened with the first wave of the Internet - can encompass many domains: from energy to mobility, from production to citizen participation. The contribution from Prof. Carlo Ratti will address these issues from a critical point of view through projects by the Senseable City Laboratory, a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the design office Carlo Ratti Associati.

Carlo Ratti, Professor at MIT and Politecnico di Milano, Director of the Senseable City Lab and Founding Partner of CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati

Carlo Ratti is an architect and engineer who leads the design and innovation practice CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the MIT Senseable City Lab. He is also a professor at the Politecnico di Milano. He graduated from the Politecnico di Torino and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, and later earned an M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. His work has been exhibited at venues including La Biennale di Venezia, the Design Museum in Barcelona, the Science Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was the Curator of the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Italian Design Day (IDD) is an annual themed event that was launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

It offers a broad program of promotional initiatives worldwide, organized through the network of Embassies, Consulates, Italian Cultural Institutes and Italian Trade Agency (ICE) offices abroad. Every year, on this occasion, over a hundred testimonials provide a showcase for Italian design and creativity.
