Make some Noise: Creative Coding Crafts Space [c3s] meetup #10
Perlin noise, Simplex noise, Brownian noise, random noise. It’s all the noise all the time all at once. What is it and what’s all the fuss about?
With noise you can add textures, generate organic-looking shapes and patterns, make your sketch look more visually engaging, create motion that mimics life, make pleasing colour palettes, and so much more. (Perlin) noise can be said to be the very foundation that makes a lot of creative coding / generative art what it is.
We will look at examples of how you might encounter noise in generative art in a variety of tools, including TouchDesigner, p5.js, GLSL and maybe more. In fact, if you’re very (un)lucky we might even make some music starting from noise.
Different tools make some effects easier to achieve than others but, at the end of the day, a tool is just a tool. What’s important is that you’ll get a feel for a small slice of all the cool things you can make with noise!
You don’t need to have any experience in (creative) coding in JavaScript or TouchDesigner; just bring your curiosity and creativity! We’ll have sketches ready that you can modify and play with. Have a think about which tool(s) you might want to work with and head over to:
TouchDesigner, if you want to use TouchDesigner. Make sure you download a free copy in advance. Bring a 3-wheel mouse if you’re not on a Mac.
OpenProcessing, if you want to try out p5.js. Just make a free account.
ShaderToy, if you’re feeling like braving some GLSL shaders. Again, just make a free account.
If you have done any creative work with noise, please do show us. Got any other creative-coding/adjacent work? Bring it along. It will be very chill and informal!
Please bring a 💻 laptop to follow along.
This workshop will be run by c3s co-organiser Dea Bankova (@dea.x.machina). Dea has been building her creative coding practice in a variety of tools over the past 5 years, and has most recently been fascinated by TouchDesigner. In her non-free time, she works at Canva as a frontend dev, and previously built visual interactive storytelling pages at Reuters Graphics.

🌸 About c3s
Creative coding crafts space embodies the notion of making space - physical space, head space, collaboration space - where we can get together and craft coding projects, generative artwork, new or ‘traditional’ forms of creative coding projects: anything that is born out of the interactions and inspiration that ‘space’ allows for.
